You have made the commitment. The question is whether you have genuinely landed in it.
L5 is the last lumbar vertebra β the foundation of the foundation, the transition point between the mobile spine and the fixed pelvis. Everything above it rests on what it can provide. When L5 is blocked, the commitment is formally made but not genuinely inhabited: one foot in, one foot maintaining the option of retreat. The half-commitment is technically in the chosen ground and experientially standing at an angle to it.
You feel it as:
- the acute lower back episode β the sudden collapse at an ordinary movement, the body expressing a chronic situation at a breaking point
- chronic lower back ache at the very base of the lumbar spine β the weight of a life not yet fully chosen
- sciatica running down the outer leg to the top of the foot β the foundation under more load than the current structure can carry
- the half-commitment β technically committed, strategically not quite landed, one exit route maintained just in case
- the transition that never quite completes β always just left something, never quite arrived somewhere new
- sleep that does not fully restore β the body maintaining the hedge even during the hours designated for rest
- the chronic background anxiety of someone standing on ground they have not fully chosen to trust
The genuine commitment is not the absence of movement or challenge. It is roots deep enough that movement does not threaten. The tree that survives the storm is not the one that was never tested β it is the one whose roots went deeper with each significant challenge.
